Trump officially directs Pentagon to create Space Force legislation for Congress

President Donald Trump signed a directive on Tuesday that ordered the Department of Defense create a Space Force as a sixth military branch.

Known as Space Policy Directive 4 (SPD-4), the directive orders the Pentagon draft legislation for Congress that would created the Space Force as a part of the the U.S. Air Force. This would establish the first military branch in over 70 years.

The National Space Council developed the directive alongside the counterparts at the Pentagon, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, National Security Council, Office of Management and Budget, and the White House Counsel's Office.

Currently the U.S. Air Force manages the space domain through the U.S. Space Command.
