Fed chief Jerome Powell says he would not resign if Trump asked him to

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Friday he would not resign from his post if President Donald Trump asked him to.

Powell made his remarks at the American Economic Association's annual meeting in Atlanta.

Powell's comments on Friday came amid rampant stock market volatility, with some market participants blaming the Fed for past and expected future rate hikes for the angst.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 posted their worst December performance since 1931 last month, falling more than 9 percent each. The S&P 500 also notched its biggest annual loss since the financial crisis, dropping more than 6 percent.
