Protesters in Hong Kong threw gasoline bombs at government headquarters and set fires in the streets on Saturday, while police stormed a subway car and hit passengers with batons and pepper spray in scenes that seem certain to inflame tensions further in a city riven by nearly three months of pro-democracy demonstrations.
Police had denied permission for a march to mark the fifth anniversary of a decision by China against fully democratic elections in Hong Kong, but protesters took to the streets anyway, as they have all summer. They provoked and obstructed police repeatedly but generally retreated once riot officers moved in, avoiding some of the direct clashes that characterized earlier protests.
Late at night, though, video from Hong Kong broadcaster TVB showed police on the platform of Prince Edward subway station swinging batons at passengers who backed into one end of a train car behind umbrellas. The video also shows pepper spray being shot through an open door at a group seated on the floor while one man holds up his hands.
I do believe the government deliberately arrested several leaders of the democratic camp to try to threaten Hong Kong people not to come out to fight against the evil law.
Lam Cheuk-ting
Hong Kong lawmaker
It wasn't clear if all the passengers were protesters. Police said they entered the station to arrest offenders after protesters assaulted others and damaged property inside. The TVB video was widely shared on social media as another example of police brutality during the protests. Angry crowds gathered outside Prince Edward and nearby Mongkok station, where police said they made arrests after protesters vandalized the customer service center and damaged ticket machines.
In a statement released Sunday morning, Hong Kong police condemned "violent protests in multiple districts."
"With such escalating violence and progressively lethal weapons of protestors," the statement said, "the safety of Police officers and other members of the public is seriously threatened. Police express severe condemnation against such acts."
Protests erupted in early June in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory of 7.4 million people. A now-shelved China extradition bill brought to the fore simmering concerns about what many in the city see as an erosion of the rights and freedoms that residents are supposed to have under a "one country, two systems" framework.
The mostly young, black-shirted protesters took over roads and major intersections in shopping districts on Saturday as they rallied and marched with no obvious destination in mind.
Authorities closed streets and a subway stop near the Chinese government office and parked water cannon trucks and erected additional barriers nearby, fearing protesters might target the building. The office would have been the endpoint of the march that police did not allow.
Instead, a group of hard-line protesters decided to take on police guarding government headquarters from behind large barriers that ring the building to keep demonstrators at bay.
While others marched back and forth nearby, a large crowd wearing helmets and gas masks gathered outside. They pointed laser beams at the officers' heads and threw objects over the barriers and at them. Police responded with tear gas, and protesters threw gasoline bombs into the compound.
Then came the blue water. A water cannon truck fired regular water, followed by repeated bursts of colored water, staining protesters and nearby journalists and leaving blue puddles in the street.
The standoff continued for some time, but protesters started moving back as word spread that police were headed in their direction. A few front-line protesters hurled gasoline bombs at the officers in formation, but there were no major clashes as police cleared the area.
Protesters regrouped and blocked a major commercial street by piling up barricades and setting a large fire. Smoke billowed into the air as hundreds of protesters waited on the other side of the makeshift barrier, many pointing laser beams that streaked the night sky above them.
Firefighters made their way into the congested area on foot to put out the fire. Police in riot gear removed the barricades and moved in quickly. They could be seen detaining a few protesters, but by then, most had already left.
As police advanced east down Hennessey Road, protesters made another stand in the Causeway Bay shopping district. They threw gasoline bombs at police, who fired tear gas and water cannons.
Protesters built another fire, a smaller one, in front of Sogo department store. Police waited behind their riot shields while firefighters put out the smoldering fire with extinguishers. When police moved in, the protesters had again retreated.
Other groups crossed Hong Kong's harbor to the Tsim Sha Tsui district, where police said they set fires and threw gasoline bombs on Nathan Road.
Democratic Party lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting said Hong Kong citizens would keep fighting for their rights and freedoms despite the arrests of several prominent activists and lawmakers in the past two days, including activist Joshua Wong.
Protesters are demanding the full withdrawal of the extradition bill — which would have allowed Hong Kong residents to be sent to mainland China to stand trial — as well as democratic elections and an investigation into police use of force.
"I do believe the government deliberately arrested several leaders of the democratic camp to try to threaten Hong Kong people not to come out to fight against the evil law," Lam said at what was advertised as a Christian march earlier Saturday.
About 1,000 people marched to a Methodist church and police headquarters. They alternated between singing hymns and chanting slogans of the pro-democracy movement. An online flyer for the demonstration called it a "prayer for sinners" and featured images of a Christian cross and embattled Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, who had proposed the extradition bill.
The Civil Human Rights Front, the organizer of pro-democracy marches that have drawn upward of a million people this summer, canceled its march after failing to win police approval. Police said that while previous marches have started peacefully, they have increasingly degenerated into violence.
The standing committee of China's legislature ruled on Aug. 31, 2014, that Hong Kong residents could elect their leader directly, but that the candidates would have to be approved by a nominating committee. The decision failed to satisfy democracy advocates in Hong Kong and led to the 79-day long Occupy Central protests that fall, in which demonstrators camped out on major streets in the financial district and other parts of the city.

Apple will replace some Apple Watch screens for free, the company announced on Friday.
The new repair program is because of a screen cracking problem with Aluminum Series 2 and Series 3 watches sold between September 2016 and September 2019.
"Apple has determined that, under very rare circumstances, a crack may form along the rounded edge of the screen in aluminum models of an Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3," according to the bulletin on Apple's website.
Customers can check if their Apple Watch model is eligible for a free repair from an Apple store or an authorized service provider on Apple's website. A list of affected models is also on Apple's website.
Apple will fix watches for three years after they were sold, according to the notice. Apple's watch is seen as a success and growth story for the company. The company considers Apple Watch to be part of a "wearables" product category, which did $5.53 billion in sales last quarter.

Bags of heroin, some laced with fentanyl, are displayed before a press conference regarding a major drug bust, at the office of the New York Attorney General, September 23, 2016 in New York City.

U.S. and Chinese officials held a "working-level" call Thursday evening in which Beijing said it was making progress in restricting outbound fentanyl shipments, according to three sources familiar with the matter, homing in on a personal policy focus of President Donald Trump as it tries to get the White House to rollback tariffs.
In the call, these sources said, Chinese officials again reiterated a desire for relief on tariffs, with 15% tariffs set to hit $112 billion goods on Sunday, and existing tariffs to rise on an additional $250 billion in goods a month later.
It's unclear whether President viewed the evidence China provided – which could not be learned by CNBC – as sufficient progress. As he departed the White House for Camp David on Friday evening, he told reporters the next round of tariffs is still on.
It's unclear whether the level of detail provided by China on halting fentanyl exports would be enough to get President Trump to roll back the tariffs that, according to aides, he believes are his most effective policy tool.
Fentanyl has been a high priority for the White House as it moves to combat the opioid crisis.
Stopping shipment of the drug from China to the U.S. was a focal point of conversation for the two leaders when they met at the G-20 in Buenos Aires in late 2018.
At a bilateral dinner, President Xi Jinping committed to reclassifying fentanyl and related drugs as "controlled substances," and subjecting anyone caught making or selling the drugs to maximum penalty.
Trump has accused Xi of not doing enough since then to stop the flow of illicit drugs to the US.
In a briefing this week, China's Foreign Ministry said it's "groundless and false" that China is the main source of fentanyl in the U.S., and that the U.S. isn't doing enough to stem demand for the drug among domestic users.
"With 5% of the world's total population, the U.S. consumes 80% of the global opioid medication," spokesperson Geng Shuang told reporters on Aug. 29. "If the US really wants to solve its fentanyl problem, it should put its own house in order."
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
The U.S. Trade Representative and the Treasury Department declined to comment.

The TSA has reversed its decision to ban the stylized Coke bottles sold at Disney's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge lands.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the Transportation Security Administration had banned the souvenir from flights because it looks like an explosive.
However on Friday, TSA issued a new statement, saying, "We have completed our review, and instructed our officers to treat these as an oversized liquid."
Fans became enamored with these plastic bottles even before the California iteration of Galaxy's Edge opened in May.
Many have collected the bottles and brought them home from the park to display on shelves or, in some cases, turn into Christmas tree ornaments.
Representatives for Disney did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
Travelers who visit the planet of Batuu are permitted to board flights with hand-built lightsabers and astromech droids sold at the Black Spire Outpost.
The TSA's "What Can I Bring" guide even has a sense of humor about it, saying: "Sadly the technology doesn't currently exist to create a real lightsaber.
However, you can pack a toy lightsaber in your carry-on or checked bag. May the force be with you. "

President Donald Trump on Friday said that tariffs on Chinese goods are still set to go into effect Sunday despite facing backlash from a number of companies.
The U.S. government will begin collecting 15% tariffs on $112 billion in Chinese imports starting Sept. 1.
Speaking to reporters before departing the White House Friday evening, Trump said a meeting on trade between U.S. and Chinese officials set for September was still scheduled. Trump also said U.S. officials are currently having conversations with their Chinese counterparts on trade.
Chinese and U.S. trade negotiating teams are maintaining effective communication, China's Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
The tit-for-tat tariff war now involves hundreds of billions of dollars of each country's goods and threatens global economic growth. Uncertainty about when or how it could end has roiled markets and complicated corporations' long-term investment plans.
More than 160 industry groups have written a letter to the president, asking him to postpone the tariff increase on Chinese goods scheduled to take place this year.
However, on Friday Trump insisted the tariffs will continue as planned. He also criticized the tariffs China has set in place which he said have devalued their currency.
"It's a bad situation they've put themselves in," he said.
Trump also commented on media reports about the departure of his personal assistant Madeleine Westerhout, who was let go after reportedly sharing confidential information about his family with reporters
"She called me, she was very upset," he said. "She was very down and she said she was drinking a little bit and she was with reporters and everything she said was off the record but that still doesn't really cover for her ... [She] mentioned a couple of things about my children but she's a very good person. I always felt she did a good job."

Saudi Aramco is considering Tokyo — instead of early favorites London and Hong Kong — as the international destination to list its shares, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
The initial public offering of Saudi Arabia's state oil giant's shares will take place over two stages: A flotation on the Saudi stock exchange later this year, followed by an international listing in 2020 or 2021, the Journal reported, citing advisors and officials familiar with the plans.
Aramco's IPO, when it goes ahead, is expected to be the world's largest.
The company had targeted to raise $100 billion through selling 5% of its share in the public markets, but it's not clear what the final amount will be, according to the report.
Many stock exchanges around the world have courted Aramco to list on their markets, with London and Hong Kong widely considered the front-runners to clinch the deal. But political uncertainties facing the two cities — arising from Brexit, the U.K.'s impending departure from the European Union, as well as prolonged protests in Hong Kong — have diminished their attractiveness, the report said.
Still, Saudi officials and Aramco advisors told the Journal that while they're leaning toward picking Tokyo, no final decision has been made and all options were still on the table.
CNBC has reached out to Aramco for comment on the Journal report, but didn't immediately hear back. The company told the Journal it "continues to engage with the shareholder on IPO readiness activities." It added it "is ready and timing will depend on market conditions and be at a time of the shareholder's choosing."
Japan Exchange Group, which runs the Tokyo Stock Exchange, didn't immediately reply to CNBC's request for comment.

The trade conflict between Japan and South Korea is a sign that the global order "is now collapsing," according to Deborah Elms, executive director at the Asian Trade Centre.
The two Asian countries are currently locked in a trade dispute that flared up in July when Japan restricted exports of high-tech materials to South Korea which are critical for producing semiconductors and display screens.
Since then, the two sides have threatened to drop each other from their respective preferential list of trusted trade partners, paving the way for potentially lengthy licensing processes — Japan's threat took effect on Wednesday. As things escalated, South Korea also scrapped a military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan.
"I think that this Japan-Korea incident is a symptom of what happens when a system starts to collapse," Elms told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday. "You have trade disputes that escalate and there's no hand brake anymore, so they roll over into security disputes — and then again, there's no hand brake, so they can continue to percolate and there's no obvious way to end them."
"We are at a situation that, to be honest, really could have been reined in at any point, should have been reined in at some point ... and yet doesn't seem to be stopping," said Elms, whose projects include the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), according to the Asian Trade Centre.
South Koreans participate in a rally to denounce Japan's new trade restrictions and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on August 24, 2019 in Seoul, South Korea.

Elms said the tensions between Seoul and Tokyo were "like two neighbors arguing over who planted the tree on the property line that is now encroaching on both sides."
"While we're arguing about a tree that is on the property line, there is a forest fire on the ridge line," Elms said.
Tensions between the two countries hark back more than six decades, since Japan occupied the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945 during World War II. Both countries signed a treaty in 1965 — but relations continue to be strained over compensation for forced labor by Japanese companies and sexual slavery of Korean women in wartime brothels.
The ongoing trade fight between the U.S. and China has rattled world markets and raised concerns over the global outlook. Late last week, both Washington and Beijing announced new tariffs on billions of dollars worth of each other's goods.
"I think there are many things at this point that could derail the system," Elms said, when commenting on the current global order. "Anything can happen," she said citing countries such as the U.S. that are "less respectful of the rules-based system."
She said that when rules and norms break down, "lots of things change."
"I think, we're at that moment where things are starting to shift."
With a system that's facing multiple threats and "no anchor," policymakers have been left unclear on how to respond amid rising uncertainty and risk, Elms said.

Shamil Zhumatov | Reuters
North Korea's parliament has approved changes to the country's constitution to solidify leader Kim Jong Un's role as head of state, official state media said on Thursday.
The move comes after Kim was formally named head of state and commander-in-chief of the military in a new constitution in July that analysts said was possibly aimed at preparing for a peace treaty with the United States.
North Korea has long called for a peace deal with the United States to normalize relations and end the technical state of war that has existed since the 1950-1953 Korean War, which concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
Kim's legal status as "representing our state has been further consolidated to firmly ensure the monolithic guidance of
the Supreme Leader over all state affairs, " state news agency KCNA quoted Choe Ryong Hae, president of the presidium of the supreme people's assembly, as saying.
The presidium president had historically been the nominal head of state.
But the new constitution said Kim, as chairman of the State Affairs Commission (SAC), a top governing body created in 2016, was the supreme representative of all the Korean people, as well as "commander-in-chief".
A previous constitution simply called Kim the "supreme leader" who commanded the country's "overall military force".
Thursday's constitutional amendments appear to confirm that North Korea's legal system will now recognize Kim as head of state.
The new constitution authorizes Kim to promulgate legislative ordinances and major decrees and decisions and
appoint or recall diplomatic envoys to foreign countries, KCNA said.
"With the amendment, Kim Jong Un is reviving his grandfather's head of state system," said Cheong Seong-chang, a
senior fellow at the Sejong Institute. "He has become a de facto head of state."

In reality Kim, a third-generation hereditary leader, rules North Korea with an iron fist and the title change will mean
little to the way he wields power.
The back-to-back constitutional revision is unprecedented and Kim is emerging as perhaps the most powerful leader since his grandfather Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea, said Rachel Minyoung Lee, an analyst with NK News, a website that tracks North Korea.
"By further bolstering the SAC chairman's authority, Kim Jong Un is now on par with Kim Il Sung," she said.
Other analysts noted that the moves simply codified the power Kim Jong Un already wields as supreme leader.
"This is more a matter of shuffling the card deck and clarifying a few lines of authority," said Michael Madden, an
expert on North Korean leadership and a fellow at the U.S-based Stimson Center.
"There is no question that Kim Jong Un is the regime's key and - on strategic policy - sole decider," he said.
There has been scant progress in the U.S. aim of getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program despite
three meetings between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
Trump has said he and Kim agreed at their last meeting to resume working-level talks, although these have yet to happen.
North Korea has since conducted multiple missile tests, while accusing Washington of breaking a pledge to stop joint military exercises with South Korea.

Uber and Lyft on Thursday pledged $60 million to a California ballot initiative for the 2020 election that would maintain the status of their drivers as contract workers.
The companies have been fighting a California bill that could force them to reclassify their drivers as employees. The bill passed through the California Assembly in May and is working its way through the state Senate.
"We are working on a solution that provides drivers with strong protections that include an earnings guarantee, a system of worker-directed portable benefits, and first-of-its kind industry-wide sectoral bargaining, without jeopardizing the flexibility drivers tell us they value so much," said Adrian Durbin, Lyft senior director of communications, in a statement. "We remain focused on reaching a deal, and are confident about bringing this issue to the voters if necessary."
Under Lyft and Uber's proposed ballot measure, California drivers would be receive more protections and benefits while maintaining their status as independent contractors. Those benefits would include a minimum earnings of $21 per booked hour, injured worker protection, and paid sick leave and paid family leave for those who drive a minimum of 20 hours per week.
