Facebook daily users down in Europe, flat in North America, but revenue keeps rising

Facebook's daily user count for Europe declined for the second quarter in a row while the company's daily user base in the U.S. and Canada remained flat for the third-straight quarter, Facebook announced Tuesday.

The company reported 278 million European daily users, down from 279 million last quarter. Users in the U.S. and Canada remained unchanged at 185 million.

Despite the European decline, Facebook was able to grow its total number of daily active users to 1.5 billion, up from 1.47 billion last quarter.

The company also managed to grow its revenue for the U.S. and Canada market, reporting revenue of $6.67 billion for the geography, up 7 percent from Q2. This continued a trend seen in the previous quarter, where revenue rose 10 in the region despite flat user growth. This trend suggests that Facebook still has room to increase ad revenue even as user growth flattens out.

The decline in daily European users comes amid a number of challenges for the social media company. The company has been trying to quell the spread of misinformation on its services while dealing with scandals involving the management and security of user data. Europe, meanwhile, introduced the General Data Protection Regulation earlier this year, giving Europeans more rights to protect their data from companies like Facebook.

Facebook's share price was up nearly 3 percent in after-hours trading, building on a 3 percent gain during trading hours on Tuesday.
