A private survey of China's factory sector showed on Monday that manufacturing activity was lower than expected in June.
The Caixin/Markit factory Purchasing Managers' Index for June was 49.4. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the indicator to come in at 50. The PMI reading for May was 50.2.
The June reading was the lowest since January when the indicator came in at 48.3.
PMI readings above 50 indicate expansion, while those below that signal contraction.
China's official PMI stood at 49.4 in June, contracting more than expected, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics on Sunday. That was unchanged from the previous month. Analysts polled by Reuters had predicted a reading of 49.5.
The official PMI survey typically polls a large proportion of big businesses and state-owned enterprises. The Caixin indicator, features a bigger mix of small- and medium-sized firms.
The PMI is a survey of businesses about the operating environment. Such data offer a first glimpse into what's happening in an economy, as they are usually among the first major economic indicators released each month.
For China, the PMI is among economic indicators that investors globally watch closely for signs of trouble amid domestic headwinds and the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute.

Revenues at global telecommunications companies are set to revive again after years of decline, predicted Morgan Stanley —and that would spell good news for telco stocks.
The investment bank picked out five stocks it rated "overweight" that investors can buy: U.S. telco AT&T, HKT from Hong Kong, Canada's Telus, Brazil's Telefonica Brasil, Cellnex from Spain and Sweden's Tele2. The overweight rating is an indication that the bank expects a stock or index to outperform its peers.
"We think it's time for investors to revisit global telcos ... the stocks look under-owned and undervalued," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a Thursday report.
The bank expects global telco revenue growth to more than double between 2019 and 2021.
Among other drivers of that growth, it highlighted the trend of people consuming more data at an increased pace, causing them to sign up for multiple cellular plans. A wider usage of additional devices — such as smart watches and a second mobile phone for work — is also driving up data usage and subscriber growth, according to the report.
Carriers are also boosting revenues on more premium services, and attracting more users through increasing affordable plans, it said.
The 5G rollout — the next generation of high-speed mobile internet — is also set to drive up stocks of cell tower operators. Telcos need to lease space from these operators in order to install antennas and power wireless networks.

In this sector, Morgan Stanley recommended Chinese cell tower companies, in particular China Tower. The bank said that 5G licences have been awarded to three telcos in the country, and China Tower is set to benefit from that.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping emerged from a high-stakes meeting Saturday agreeing to proceed with trade talks after escalating tariffs between the two nations threatened to disrupt the world economy.
The summit, on the sidelines of the G-20 meeting in Japan, was a continuation of Trump's years-long crusade to overhaul the U.S. trade relationship with China. He has long accused Beijing of unfair trade practices that sap American manufacturing jobs, and ran for president in 2016 on cracking down on China.
Nearly two-and-a-half years into his White House term, Trump finds himself embroiled in a trade war that threatens to damage the U.S. economy and hamstring his 2020 reelection bid. He has used tariffs to try to force China to the negotiating table. The president aims to end the conflict while forcing China to address trade deficits, intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers, among other grievances.
Trump's face-to-face meeting with Xi at the G-20 summit is just the latest step in a back and forth with massive implications for the global economy.
Here's a timeline of the trade war between the world's two largest economies.

Before launching his presidential campaign in 2015, Trump repeatedly called for a crackdown on China's trade practices. In one May 2014 tweet, he said: "Remember, China is not a friend of the United States!"
May 1, 2016: A campaign rallying cry
As a presidential candidate, Trump makes pushing back against alleged Chinese trade abuses a campaign priority. "We can't continue to allow China to rape our country, and that's what they're doing," he said at a rally in Indiana in May 2016.
May 11, 2017: An early positive step
The U.S. and China strike trade deals that cover products such as beef and poultry, but leave disagreements over steel, aluminium and other issues unresolved.
Jan. 22, 2018: The tariffs begin
The Trump administration announces tariffs on imported solar cells and certain washing machines. China criticizes the move.
March 2, 2018: Trade wars are 'easy to win'

Trump shoots fear into businesses and financial markets by endorsing trade wars.
"When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win," the president writes.
March 8, 2018: Trump imposes metals tariffs
Trump authorizes tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent on steel and aluminium imports, respectively. In approving the duties, he said "a strong steel and aluminium industry are vital to our national security."
April 1, 2018: China takes its first shot
China retaliates against the steel and aluminium duties with tariffs on about $3 billion worth of U.S. goods.
May 3, 2018: Talks fail to end trade war
U.S. and Chinese delegations hold a round of trade talks in Beijing that do not yield a resolution to the disputes. Negotiations in the subsequent months would also not lead to a deal.
June 15, 2018: New tariffs escalate tensions
The Trump administration says it will slap a 25% tariff on $50 billion in Chinese goods. Trump cites "China's theft of intellectual property and technology and its other unfair trade practices." Beijing swiftly retaliates, announcing tariffs on $50 billion in U.S. products.
Sept. 17, 2018: Trump ups the stakes
Trump announces 10% tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods, with a plan to hike the rate to 25% at the start of 2019. He threatens additional tariffs on $267 billion in Chinese products if Beijing retaliates.

A phone call between Trump and Xi restarts talks between the two sides. The U.S. president said the leaders put "a heavy emphasis on trade."
Nov. 26, 2018: Trump threatens wider tariffs
Trump tells The Wall Street Journal that he will likely not delay the increase in the tariff rate on $200 billion in Chinese goods past Jan. 1. He also suggests he could put a 10 percent tariff on Apple iPhones and laptops imported from China.

Trump and Xi have dinner at the G-20 summit in Argentina. The U.S. agrees to delay a planned increase of the tariff rate on $200 billion in Chinese goods to 25% from 10%. They set out to strike a trade deal within 90 days.
Dec. 29, 2018: Trump touts 'big progress'
After a call with Xi, Trump says a trade deal is "moving along very well." It is unclear what progress the sides made, as confusion swirled following the Argentina meeting about what exact steps Beijing and Washington would take to move toward an agreement.
Jan. 7, 2019: Trade talks resume
An American delegation heads to Beijing for three days as trade talks restart.
Feb. 24, 2019: Tariffs delayed again
Trump again delays his plans to increase tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods to 25% from 10%, citing "substantial progress" in the most recent round of trade talks with China. He says the White House and Beijing will plan a summit at his Mar-a-Lago resort to "conclude an agreement" assuming "both sides make additional progress."
April 10, 2019: 'Making progress'
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the U.S. and China are making progress on a trade deal, including resolving a key sticking point on enforcement that had been dragging out the process.
May 5, 2019: Talks fall apart

Trump says he will increase tariff rates on Chinese goods as talks move "too slowly" and China attempts to "renegotiate." The White House later accuses Beijing of backing out of major commitments in a developing agreement.
May 10, 2019: Tariff rates jump
Tariff rates on $200 billion in Chinese goods increases to 25% from 10%. China then hiked duties on $60 billion in U.S. goods to as high as 25% on June 1.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on Saturday to proceed with negotiations after a series of escalations to their nations' trade war threatened to disrupt the global economy.
On the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan, the two leaders held a highly anticipated meeting, which Chinese media outlets reported ultimately took about 80 minutes.
Speaking after the bilateral, Trump said it had gone as well as it could have, and that negotiations with China would continue.
"We are back on track," the president said.
The Chinese state media, meanwhile, reported the two sides had agreed to restart talks and that the U.S. did not plan to levy any new tariffs on Chinese goods at this time.
The result of the presidents' talks appeared to align with what many experts predicted ahead of the event. That is, analysts and former diplomats who spoke with CNBC projected that there would be an agreement to temporarily pause any trade war escalation.
Still, markets were on edge about the meeting because Trump himself had suggested that he would be deciding whether to hit China with more punitive trade taxes if he didn't like what he heard from Xi. On the other hand, there had been sporadic hopes that Saturday's meeting could have resulted in the announcement of a framework for some sort of long-term deal.
Leading up to the meeting
At the outset of the high-stakes talks, Trump said he was open to a trade deal that would be "monumental."
"I actually think that we were very close and then something happened where it slipped a little bit and now we're getting a little bit closer," Trump said on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G-20) meeting in Osaka, western Japan.
"But it would be historic if we could do a fair trade deal. We're totally open to it and you're totally open to it," he said.
"I think this will be a very productive meeting and I think we can go on to do something that truly will be monumental," he added.
Xi, meanwhile, said at the beginning of the meeting that he was ready to exchange views on fundamental issues.
"Forty years on, enormous change has taken place in the international situation and China-U.S. relations, but one basic fact remains unchanged: China and the United States both benefit from cooperation and lose in confrontation," Xi said.
"Today I'm prepared to exchange views with you on the fundamental issues concerning the growth of China-U.S. relations," the Chinese leader added.
The commentary ahead of the meeting from Chinese state media suggested the two countries would not have an easy time reaching an agreement. China's Communist Party-run Global Times said earlier on Saturday the world had to "contain capricious U.S. actions," pointing to examples like Trump withdrawing from the Paris climate accord.
"The world needs to rein in the U.S., although it's difficult," the paper said in an editorial. "The problem is that many countries have misgivings in expressing their opposition to U.S. bullying tactics out of fear for U.S. power, or hope to profit from the U.S. stirring up the global order through opportunism."
What was at stake
The Trump-Xi meeting had been deemed a globally significant event because the ongoing trade war has threatened to disrupt many countries' economies and has roiled businesses' international supply lines.
OECD Secretary-General Jose Angel Gurria told CNBC on Friday that, if talks between Trump and Xi fell through, that would "be very, very destructive."
A fallout, he added, "would spill over to practically every single economy in the world ... because (the U.S. and China) have this massive relationship with the rest of the world, you would have this inevitable impact, very negative impact."
The International Monetary Fund warned in June that the implemented and proposed tariffs between the two countries could potentially cut global economic output by 0.5% in 2020.

The most personal attack of Thursday's Democratic debate was aimed not at President Donald Trump, but at former Vice President Joe Biden.
California Sen. Kamala Harris called out Biden on the issue of race, saying the way he recently described his past working relationship with two segregationist lawmakers was "hurtful."
Biden, at a campaign event earlier this month, had cited his ability to get things done even with segregationist senators as examples of the type of "civility" in Congress that has since disappeared. Numerous Democratic presidential candidates took Biden to task for the comments, though some in his party, including civil rights icon John Lewis, defended the 2020 frontrunner's remarks.
Harris also accused Biden of opposing busing, which Biden disputed.
"There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day, and that little girl was me," Harris said.
"I will tell you that on this subject, it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously. We have to act swiftly."
Harris' official Twitter account quickly followed up, posting a photo of the candidate as a child.
Biden called Harris' attack "a mischaracterization of my position across the board," and launched into a fiery defense of his record on race.
"I have supported the [Equal Rights Amendment] from the beginning," Biden said. "I'm the guy that extended the Voting Rights Act for 25 years, we got to the place where we got 98 out of 98 votes in the United States senate doing it. I've also argued very strongly that we in fact deal with the notion of denying people access to the ballot box."
Biden's campaign did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment about the exchange. But Cristobal Alex, a senior advisor to Biden's campaign, tweeted that it was "outrageous" to attack President Barack Obama's veep "because he worked to convince" Republicans to pass civil rights legislation.

Joe Biden defended the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, calling for building on it rather than replacing it with the "Medicare for All" system pushed by Sen. Bernie Sanders.
"The quickest fastest way to do it is build on Obamacare, to build on what we did," Biden said Thursday night during the chaotic second night of the first Democratic debate of the 2020 cycle.
Biden leads the 20-plus candidate presidential primary field in the polls. Sanders usually polls second.
Biden said he opposes anyone, Republican or Democrat, who would remove or replace Obamacare.
Biden's comments were the latest iteration of his strategy to tie himself closely to the legacy of President Barack Obama, under whom he served as vice president for eight years.
Biden said that adding a public option, while maintaining private insurance, is a more practical short-term option than Sanders' proposal to tear down the private health care industry entirely.
Sanders refused to budge and slammed the health insurance industry for its profit motive.
"We'll do it the way real change has always taken place," Sanders said. "We will have Medicare for All when tens of millions of people are prepared to stand up and tell the insurance companies that their day is gone and health care is a human right and not something to make huge profits off of."

The top Democratic candidates in the 2020 presidential race wasted little time in their first primary debate before taking heavy swings at President Donald Trump.
Vice President Joe Biden said that "Donald Trump put us in a horrible situation." Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called Trump a "pathological liar" and "a racist." California Sen. Kamala Harris slammed Trump's signature tax cuts as a boon for "the top 1%."
And that was just in the first 10 minutes.
The early attacks represented a stark rhetorical shift from the previous night, when 10 other Democratic candidates — who on average were less popular than the Thursday night group — focused more of their energy on laying out their policy visions early on.
Political analysts had widely expected the Democrats to hammer the Republican president throughout both nights, along with Biden, who has maintained a commanding lead in the polls despite being by far the biggest target in the Democratic field.
But that wasn't the case for much of the first half of Wednesday night's debate — and Trump, who was traveling to Japan for the G-20 summit, appeared to take notice.

The Federal Communications Commission has opened a new investigation into whether Sinclair Broadcast Group engaged in misrepresentations or a lack of candor in its failed effort to win approval for a $3.9 billion bid to purchase Tribune Media.
In a June 25 letter to Sinclair posted Wednesday on the FCC's website, the government agency directed Sinclair to answer a series of questions and provide documents by July 9, warning that "failing to respond accurately and completely to this (letter) constitutes a violation of the act and our rules."
Sinclair did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
An administrative judge in March dropped a hearing into allegations that Sinclair, the largest U.S. broadcast station owner, may have misled regulators. Judge Jane Halprin added however that the allegations "are extremely serious charges that reasonably warrant a thorough examination."
Tribune terminated the sale of 42 TV stations in 33 markets to Sinclair, which has 192 stations, in August. A month earlier the FCC referred the deal for a hearing, questioning Sinclair's candor over the planned sale of some stations and suggesting Sinclair would effectively retain control over them.
The collapse of the deal, which was backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, potentially ended Sinclair's hopes of building a national conservative-leaning TV powerhouse that might have rivaled Twenty-First Century Fox's Fox News.
Sinclair in March said it continues "to maintain that we were completely candid, transparent and honest with the FCC during its review of our proposed acquisition of Tribune Media."
Andrew Schwartzman, a law professor at Georgetown University, said the FCC could have waited to address the issues when Sinclair's licenses were up for renewal, but said the inquiry was "inevitable" given the FCC's prior findings.
After the deal collapsed, the FCCs Enforcement Bureau said it did not oppose dismissal of the hearing proceeding.
Nexstar Media Group said in December it will buy Tribune in a $4.1 billion deal that would make it the largest regional U.S. TV station operator. The deal is still under review by the Justice Department and the FCC.
Democrats accused Sinclair of slanting news coverage in favor of Republicans. Trump last year criticized the Republican-led FCC for not approving the Tribune deal, saying on Twitter it "would have been a great and much needed Conservative voice for and of the People."
In 2017, the FCC said it was fining Sinclair $13.38 million after it failed to properly disclose that paid programming that aired on local TV stations was sponsored by a cancer institute.
In the latest inquiry, Sinclair could face new fines.
In May, Walt Disney said it would sell its interests in 21 regional sports networks and Fox College Sports to Sinclair for $9.6 billion.
