The U.S. could lose its measles elimination status as outbreaks in New York City and Rockland County, New York, push the total number of confirmed cases so far this year close to 1,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC has confirmed 971 cases in the first five months of this year, the greatest number of cases since 1994.
U.S. health officials declared measles eliminated in the U.S. in 2000. Before its elimination in 2000, measles infected an estimate of 3 to 4 million people each year.
